Katy and Duncans Epic Autumnal Launcells Barton Wedding

Some weddings I just know are going to be one of ‘those’ weddings from the moment I receive the first enquiry, and Katy and Duncan’s wedding was definitely one of ’those’ weddings! Somehow it had been two years since I had last captured a wedding at Launcells Barton which is located in the rolling countryside just a few miles away from Bude. But I hadn’t forgotten what an amazing venue it is and how much fun it is to capture weddings there.

Launcells Barton is great to photograph any time of year, but Autumn is particularly special. The soft autumnal light and the warmer tones of the surrounding tree’s help create a lovely backdrop for a wedding, and their’s was no different.

A Perfect October Wedding Venue in Cornwall

Tucked away near the north coast of Cornwall, Launcells Barton is a stunning historic manor house surrounded by countryside, woodland and open skies. In October, the venue feels especially atmospheric — golden leaves, muted colours and that calm, cosy autumn vibe that works so well for weddings. Katy and Duncan’s wedding, however, came immediately after Storm Amy had battered Cornwall, so we all braced ourselves for what was to come. Fortunately, the rain stayed away and they just had a rather blustery day, but that just added to the experience!

Katy and Duncan chose Launcells Barton because it felt welcoming, informal and full of character, rather than overly polished or staged. It suited them perfectly. From the moment guests arrived, the day felt unforced and easy — exactly the kind of environment where people can relax and be themselves.

A Relaxed, Documentary Approach to the Day

Neither Katy nor Duncan wanted their wedding to feel like a photoshoot. They wanted to enjoy the day, spend time with their friends and family, and trust that the moments would be captured naturally as everything unfolded.

That’s very much how I work. Katy and Duncan had both taken advantage of the pre-wedding shoot I include with all full day bookings, where we headed down to our local beach at Holywell Bay in July. We were treated to an amazing evening with that beautiful golden light and the stunning back drop that Gull Rocks provide.

Because of this, Katy and Duncan were really relaxed with me and this immediately helped their family to relax when I arrived in the morning to capture the preparations for the day ahead.

Instead of pulling people away or staging moments, I focused on telling the story of the day as it actually happened — the nervous excitement during morning prep, the quiet moments before the ceremony, the big laughs, hugs, and the chaos of the dance floor later on.

October weddings are ideal for this kind of documentary photography. The softer light means we can step outside for a few relaxed portraits without it feeling like an interruption — no long poses, no awkward instructions, just a short wander and a bit of breathing space together.

Ceremony, Confetti & Celebrations

Their ceremony was held in the beautiful barn. It was heartfelt, personal and full of emotion — the kind where you can feel how much everyone in the room cares about the couple. Those reactions from guests are just as important to me as the big moments themselves, and they really tell the story of the day.

Following the ceremony, we headed to the front of the house for confetti, where the wind managed to rip out Katy’s Veil which flew into one of the guests, who luckily managed to keep hold of it! Following the confetti, then guests spread themselves out in the courtyard and inside the barn for canapés and drinks. We then captured the group shots and family photos, taking advantage of the calmer space at the front of the house which was slightly more sheltered from the wind.

Then it was into the main barn for the wedding breakfast. There were some great, heartfelt speeches and then a wonderful meal. I managed to then sneak them both out for a short sunset shoot around the courtyard and the grounds, giving them some time together and a bit of breathing space. Then it was time for the dance floor and epic band The Land Of The Giants! I had never heard them before but they were amazing. They really got the dance floor buzzing and it was just a great way to end the evening. I liked the band that much, that I went to one of their gigs with Katy and Duncan just before Christmas to see them again, Thanks again to TLOTG for the tickets and Katy and Duncan for asking me!

What did they think?

I was really proud to receive the following review from Katy:

We can’t fully put into words how amazing you have been from the start. From the first zoom call we had, we knew it had to be you. You were just so friendly and down to earth (and also live across the road from us which is a bonus!).

We are both quite shy about having our photos taken, so the engagement shoot we were initially quite nervous about. But it was such fun having a relaxed evening stroll around Holywell Bay at sunset and we were amazed by the beauty of the photos you captured. We loved them so much we used one as our guest book at the wedding for everyone to sign.

We also loved having a meet up before the wedding to chat through the day so you knew all the details and what was important. Despite the yellow weather warning for rain, you managed to clear the skies of hail and rain for the most stunning photos on the day. We can not wait for the full album to come back and see all the magical moments you have captured!

You also went above and beyond and kindly went round to our house on the morning of the wedding to collect a very important parcel that arrived late! It meant so much that Duncan could wear the hand made, personalised cufflinks and you made that happen!

Thanks for getting the best out of us. We 100% recommend Chris Armstrong as your wedding photographer.
